Yes. Every year, I set goals to set goals.
The odd thing is that the more I learn about the importance of setting good goals, the harder it gets to set them. Somewhere between the SMART version, the one-word-for-the-year version and the colour-coded spreadsheet version, I’ve reached the point where I need a goal just to decide which goal-setting method to stick with.
What I have learnt is that the best goals to achieve are the ones you can control. “Win the league” depends on other people. “Practise my backhand three times a week” depends only on me, and my backhand.
And the most successful goals of all are the ones I set on 31st December. By then I know I’ve achieved them. The rest of the year is just paperwork.
What’s the one goal you keep carrying over from year to year?
Do you set personal goals for yourself?
