My plans for the day took an abrupt U-turn following an early morning email to my pension trustee account. No table tennis practice today, and no mindset driving sessions either—I cleared my schedule and made myself available for urgent calls.

With no tradesmen around and zero DIY activities planned, the house felt strangely, eerily quiet. Apart from the occasional whirring from our new heat pump outside, there was total silence.

I say heat pump, but it actually looks and sounds suspiciously like a high-security server unit sat in the garden. Much like a mainframe server, its cooling fans kick in for apparently no reason at all. It lays dormant for hours, just idling away as it waits for instructions from a digital thermostat—all simply to heat the hot water, though it looks far more menacing and clever than that.

I’m keeping a close eye on it. I just hope there’s no state-sponsored malware hidden inside, quietly transmitting real-time intelligence to Beijing regarding our hot water requirements. It makes you wonder if the wall-mounted thermostats have hidden cameras tucked inside them, too…

Even the dogs were unnaturally subdued this morning. Do they somehow sense I have high-stakes corporate calls to attend, or are they simply relieved that the 78-day siege is over and they can finally return to their preferred routine of morning naps and afternoon walks?

I seized the gaps between trustee calls to cross off a few lingering administrative tasks. With my study now fully operational, I could step away from the laptop to focus on other matters. Yet, like the heat pump outside, I could hear the Mac’s internal fans occasionally whirring to life whenever I walked past the door. I wonder if the intelligence network has infiltrated the study, as well.

In the evening, as our friends arrived for our official ‘Not an Opening Ceremony’, all our careful design choices, tradesmen selections, and final finishes achieved the exact reaction the house and garden deserve: an immediate, wide-eyed “Wow.”

The garden instantly steals the show the moment anyone steps into the living room. It’s a priceless reaction. I only hope the servers in Beijing captured it in high definition.
