Having a two-hour sleep yesterday afternoon was much needed. Waking up wide awake at 3:00 AM this morning was decidedly not. Still, determined to make up for lost time, I got stuck into a technical admin task I’d been putting off.

As is usually the case with tech, I immediately disappeared down a labyrinthine rabbit hole of apps, software updates, online documentation, and forum searches. In fact, by the time I’d clicked through half the information, I had completely forgotten what I originally set out to achieve.

Naturally, the rabbit hole led straight to my password manager.

After what felt like hours of frustration, I discovered that my password manager hadn’t actually been saving any new logins for the last few months—despite proudly displaying a “Login Saved” confirmation every time. Honestly, I often think a good old-fashioned pen and paper would be quicker. Ancient scrolls have survived for millennia; support for my apps and operating systems expires every couple of years.

With my two bonus early-morning hours completely wasted and the bug officially logged—after my AI assistant persuaded me not to delete the entire app in a fit of rage—I moved on.

Later in the day, I braved a trip to a local barber shop that clearly lacked air conditioning. Sitting trapped under a thick plastic cape in that heat felt like a medieval torture device specifically engineered to bake the victim until they sat completely still.

By afternoon, Heatwave 4.0 peaked at a brutal 37 degrees across the South of England. Opening the front door felt like standing directly in front of a blast furnace, and the breeze offered zero relief—it was like having a giant hair dryer blown in your face. Even the dogs, who normally love sunbathing before cooling off in the shade, decided enough was enough. They ventured outside just long enough to complete their essential “admin tasks” before slinking straight back to the coolest tiles in the house.
