Meeting up with an old business colleague today at a The Barge canal-side pub brought back a flood of memories. How on earth is it that he didn’t look a single day older than when I last saw him—if anything, he looked younger! Clearly, he hasn’t spent the last ten months navigating the stress of planning a house renovation, followed by three months sealed inside a caravan with three dogs in the middle of a heatwave.
As I walked toward the pub entrance along the towpath, another layer of memory hit me. I suddenly remembered that this was the very same pub where we’d stopped years ago with our friends Sharon and Tim during a canal boat holiday. Tragically, Tim passed away not long after that trip. The holiday had been planned as one of his special ‘Memory Days’, and we certainly created a lifetime of them during our time on the water.
Sitting by the canal yesterday, watching the water drift past, those moments came rushing back—remembering the warmth, and above all, the immense laughter we shared on that trip.
