The neighbours were almost certainly eyeing me through their curtains, convinced I’ve finally lost my mind: out there diligently mowing what remains of the lawn in the middle of a drought.
Surprisingly, our grass is not only surviving the dry spell but thriving. Having spent the last two decades suffocating in near-total darkness beneath an overbearing canopy of trees and hedges, the lawn is clearly revelling in its newfound sunlight following the build. It doesn’t know it’s supposed to be dormant.
I spent the rest of the day in a somewhat fragmented state—that familiar gear where I frantically jump between administrative tasks, physical chores, and half-finished projects around the house. It’s usually a telltale sign that there’s slightly too much rattling around in my head, resulting in a flurry of semi-coordinated activity.
Despite the frantic hopping about, it turned out to be surprisingly productive. The house is shipshape, I managed to stay reasonably cool on another sweltering day, and the garden looks immaculate again.
Next time I lock eyes with the neighbour over the fence, I’ll just smile knowingly and play the part.
