I’d become surprisingly fond of the bright red labels and protective wrapping taped across our damaged kitchen upstands. It’s remarkable how quickly the human brain adapts; after a few weeks, your eyes simply filter out the eyesores until temporary measures look like intentional interior design.

Today, the replacement upstands were finally fitted and professionally sealed, bringing the kitchen to an official—and actual—finish.

The rest of the day was a comfortable mix of administrative tasks, checking in on Andy (who had his knee operation earlier in the week), a relaxed lunch, and hosting Lyn and Steve for a tour of the finished house. For the first time in months, it feels as though we are finally unwinding from the long, drawn-out saga of the build and life in the caravan.

Then came the day’s true headline event: rain.

Actual water fell from the sky for the first time in recent memory. It only lasted a fleeting thirty minutes, but it was enough to give the parched garden a brief moment of hope—and give us something new to discuss over a cup of tea.
