Occasionally, an enforced break from a routine pays unexpected dividends. After being sidelined by the ‘cold from hell’ and swallowed whole by house renovations, I returned to my morning table tennis session with my friend Kevin featuring a renewed wave of enthusiasm.

Kevin and I usually have close, hard-fought games, though I rarely walk away with the overall match. He’s a notoriously awkward defensive player with a wicked backhand attack that almost always catches me off-guard. This morning, however, he barely got a chance to use it. I was on fire, playing like a demon, and managed to snatch a couple of decisive games off him. Taking a step back really does bring you back stronger.

Returning home, I was greeted by another impressive stack of delivery boxes—Karen had clearly been at it again. Thankfully, these parcels looked relatively harmless compared to yesterday’s explosive, space-claiming mattress monster.

With a sports victory under my belt and the deliveries safely brought inside, the comfy chairs on the deck beckoned for the rest of the afternoon.
