“It’s just like being on holiday,” we both agreed as we sat out on the deck, enjoying our evening meal in the warm air.
We have officially moved into the house. We are utterly delighted with what we’ve created—or rather, what we’ve managed to create with the indispensable help of a great many tradespeople. I think I’m still in a mild state of shock over how well it has all turned out. Everything is better than we had imagined, and it really does carry the disorienting feeling of checking into a boutique holiday home.
The day brought a relentless procession of delivery drivers. Karen had been quietly orchestrating a logistical operation to replace all the items we had either discarded during the strip-out or decided were well past their sell-by date. Top of that list was our old mattress.
When the delivery truck pulled up, I fully expected two burly men to arrive huffing, puffing, and swearing as they dragged a massive, awkward rectangle of wobbly upholstery in the house. Instead, the driver handed over a cardboard box roughly the size of a rolled-up sleeping bag. For a fleeting second, I wondered if Karen had decided we were continuing our camping lifestyle indoors.
How a king-sized mattress had been compressed into a space no larger than a cigar tin was a miracle of modern engineering. Stanley knife in hand, I cautiously began peeling back the suffocating layers of heavy-duty plastic. With every slice, I suffered vivid flashbacks to unpacking the garden furniture —and the inevitable, soul-destroying trip to the recycling centre that would follow.
Then, without warning, the final layer gave out.
The vacuum seal broke with a violent whoosh. Released from its high-pressure prison, the compressed monster sprang to life, expanding exponentially and instantly claiming dominance over a two-metre radius.
I scrambled backward as this rapidly inflating block of foam and coiled metal surged toward me. For a terrifying brief moment, I genuinely believed I was going to be pinned to the wall by a piece of soft furnishings. I grappled with it, trying to wrestle the unruly, growing beast into submission while simultaneously steering it toward the bed frame.
Eventually, the monster sighed, settled into its proper king-sized proportions, and wedged itself firmly between the wall, the bed frame, and my pinned body.
After a brief wrestling match to shift it into position, the beast finally lay still. It had staged its dramatic escape, enjoyed its brief moment of explosive glory, and was now lying entirely peacefully in its new home.
I can only hope it allows me to lie just as peacefully on it tonight.
