The Man Behind the Observations
A life lived with purpose, now viewed from a slightly different angle.

Welcome. I am Mark Laker. For those who have followed this blog since its inception, you will know it began as a space for “everyday musings”—a place to process the transition from a busy career into a more personal, reflective pace of life.

The Professional Foundation
My professional life has been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, improvement, and clear communications. I have spent decades helping others navigate the complexities of the road and the boardroom. That history remains the lens through which I see the world: I appreciate things that are well-made, people who are genuine, and English that is properly spelt (with an ‘s’, never a ‘z’).

The “Unrestricted” Chapter
Today, I find myself in an “Unrestricted” phase of life. Having retired from full-time employment and moved to the beautiful Vale of Pewsey, the scenery has changed, but my curiosity hasn’t.
This blog has evolved alongside me. What started as a way to find my voice in retirement has become a weekly dispatch from the front lines of village life. It is where my “Curator” (Karen) and I navigate the “craters” of home renovation, and where I attempt to bring some “A-Team” energy to the local table tennis scene.

What to Expect
Whether I am documenting the “limp mode” tantrums of my Stuttgart Stallion, the daring canal-side escapes of my Border Collies, or the baffling mysteries of local shop names, The Wry Observer is about finding the irony in the everyday. It’s about the joy of being a grandfather in a global family, the often amusing frustrations of everyday life, and enjoying the simple pleasures of a walking across the Vale.

Join the Journey
I write for those who, like me, have spent a lifetime moving forward and are now enjoying the occasional “sidewards” glance at the world.
If you appreciate a bit of wit with your weekly news, I invite you to subscribe. It’s the best way to ensure we stay connected—wherever in the world our next adventure takes us.
