In the past when I travelled on business I would enjoy reading the inflight magazines and newspapers found on the backs of seats in Tube trains. The bulk of these publications was advertising, however there were also interesting articles to be found too.

I was pleased to see that the different inflight magazines on my recent travels still contained similar noteworthy articles…and lots of adverts for jewellery and Real Estate!

In one of these magazines a senior manager for a large multi-national company wrote about her experiences in a new role. The part I particularly found interesting was her views on decision making. She felt that there are two types of decisions. Those that could not be undone (a one-way door), and those that could be undone – if need be – (a two-way door). By applying this methodology decision making could be speeded up and the implications better understood.

A simple process that I’ll use in the future for categorising my important decisions and giving further thought and consideration to their importance. Unfortunately, I read the article too late to effect my decision to retire from full-time work! A one-way door leading to a new path!
